“My heart is what I am bringing into Sierra Leone”-Idris Elba

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has conferred a Sierra Leonean citizenship on Hollywood actor Idris Elba at a small ceremony on Friday at State House. Elba who is visiting the country for the first time said, “My heart is what I am bringing into Sierra Leone.”

The four-time Golden Globe nominee said; “I’m humbled and thankful to become citizenship of my father’s country in the presence of my favorite Uncle.” Elba said this visit is his first to Sierra Leone but assured all that it will not be the last. The ‘Luther’ star said he had plans to visit earlier but the country was in “turmoil”. He said he is determined to help in the country’s rebranding effort.

President Bio whilst handing over the diplomatic passport to Elba said: “Today, on behalf of this nation I’m grateful to formally accept you as a brother by handing over this diplomatic passport to you.”
Bio went on, “We want to tap into your network to be able to tell the world that the little nation they knew for only wars and Ebola and all the horrible stories is now a new Sierra Leone. No more blood diamond, no more Ebola.”

Following the formal ceremony, Elba and Bio held a closed-door meeting at Statehouse. Elba was born in England; his real name is Idrissa Akuna Elba.

Elba’s mother Eve is a Ghanaian and his Father Winston a Sierra Leonean, the actor has visited Ghana more than twice. In 2014, Elba planned a visit to Ghana and Sierra Leone, he even tweeted: “I’m going back to where my Mum is from for her birthday… My first time… Next up Sierra Leone.” Elba visited Ghana but could not proceed to Sierra Leone because of the deadly Ebola outbreak then.
