Benjamin Menilik George, Sierra Leone’s fastest rising rapper that goes with the stage name ‘Drizilik’ has been nominated for the 2021 coveted MTV Africa Music Awards or MAMA. The ceremony will hold on February 20 in Kampala, the bustling Ugandan capital.
Drizilik becomes another lucky Sierra Leonean for the annual award ceremony consideration by the MTV. And among all eleven lucky nominees for this year’s MAMA Listeners’ Choice category, the ‘Shukubly’ fame is the only rapper selected from Sierra Leone for nomination.
Drizilik is in the Listeners’ Choice roll with Khaligraph Jones of Kenya with whom Kao Denero of Black Leo had had a row in the former’s lyrics, ‘Diss Track.’ The Black Leo rapper hit both the Kenyan rapper and Ghana’s lyrical heavy weight, Sarkodi in his track. But in spite of his taunts, Kao’s popularity could not place a nomination for him at the MTV.
That is unlike Drizilik whose popularity soared since his first album titled ‘Shukubly.’ He has been making headlines since he released ‘Shukubly,’ earning the rapper several local and international awards climaxing in a CNN TV streak.
He is not the first Sierra Leonean for MTV awards nomination in the past, others, including LXG had been opportune but none has ever returned home with a MAMA trophy.
Drizilik was nominated for the Listeners’ Choice category. This category gives music lovers across the continent the opportunity to have their voices heard. The list of finalists for this category is being determined by votes on local radio stations and social media handles, from where they select the best ‘publicly-voted-for’ musicians from the different African countries.by
