British-Sierra Leonean soul singer, writer and performing artist, Sampha Sissay has won this year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize for his debut studio album, ‘Process’. The award was presented to Sissay by Hollywood heavyweight Idris Elba whose father is also a Sierra Leonean.
The event was held at London’s Eventim Apollo on Thursday night. Accepting the award, Sissay said: “I’d like to dedicate this award to my parents … they came over from Sierra Leone and just wanted to give us the best upbringing possible,” .Sissay also thanked his four brothers “for always giving me encouragement and making me believe in myself.”
Sissay was born in London in 1988 to Sierra Leonean parents. He has collaborated with major international acts including Kanye West and Drake.
